Filmmaker Ben Steele was the special guest during a recent episode of The Daily Show to discuss his new documentary Hunted: The War Against Gays in Russia, which exposes the gangs that entrap LGBT people and then subject them to violent abuse in the country
Steele spoke with host Jon Stewart about his experience filming these hate groups and shared his observations of the people who are enduring Russia's increasing oppression of LGBT people.
"The vigilante groups are, unfortunately, they're proud of what they do. They believe that they are carrying out good acts and they believe they are acting in the name of the majority of Russian people," Steele said.
The filmmaker reveled he was allowed to film the vigilante groups after a long negotiation process in which he convinced them he was there "not to pass judgment -- I'm there to film what's happening so that I can show it to the rest of the world, and it's for the viewer to judge the rights and the wrongs and the merits of what they're doing."
