Oliver Stark claps back at backlash to his 9-1-1 character's first gay kiss

Bigots are still arguing against queer kisses on TV.

Oliver Stark’s character on 9-1-1, Buck, finally had his first gay kiss on the show. This was a big milestone for the show and its inclusivity of LGBTQ+ characters — just like its spinoff, 9-1-1 Lone Star, which features characters played by actors Ronen Rubinstein, Rafael L. Silva, and Brian Michael Smith.

While many viewers applauded the show for including Buck’s same-sex kiss and embracing his bisexual identity, there have also been haters who are now attacking Stark on social media. The actor wrote in response:

“Humbled and overwhelmed by the positive reaction to Buck’s storyline. I’ve read so many of your messages and I couldn’t be prouder. If you are one of the smaller group of people commenting on my posts about how this has ruined the show. I would like you to know that I truly don’t care. This is a show about love and inclusion. It’s featured queer relationships from the very beginning including a beautiful Black lesbian marriage played out by two of the best actresses I’ve ever watched.”

Stark concluded, “If one other character finding a new facet to his sexuality and realizing his bisexuality is your deal breaker — I fear you’ve missed the entire point of the show. You are not required to announce your departure.”

Following this annoyingly controversial gay kiss, 9-1-1 fans are speculating that the series might finally explore Buck’s relationship with his best friend, Eddie (played by Ryan Guzman). We’ve loved watching those two for a long time and wouldn’t be mad if the show doesn’t go in that direction. But if it does, we’re SO here for it.

One thing about LGBTQ+ people: they kiss each other! Get over it, babes.
