Prom Canceled Due to Lesbian Couple

An Alabama high school prom has been canceled following a lesbian student's request to bring her girlfriend. Cynthia Stewart, a 17-year-old junior at Tharptown High School, asked her principal for permission to bring her girlfriend to the prom and was told no. The principal then forced Stewart to remove a sticker she was wearing that read "I am a lesbian" and told her she didn't have that much freedom of speech at her school.

The ACLU has since demanded that school officials allow Stewart to bring her girlfriend to the prom and refrain from further violating her First Amendment rights.

Stewart is a member of her school's prom planning committee, had personally raised over $200 for the prom, and created the theme her classmates had chosen for the dance.
