Above: Marc Martin - 'Beau Menteur.' What does “macho” mean in the context of the 21st-century and our new understandings of gender? Read more below.
There is no simple way of defining it and it has never been more controversial -- "macho" is something we all recognize instantly. But what does "macho" mean in the context of the 21st-century and our new understandings of gender? Is there a place between embrace and rejection where we can take a more subtle stance than simply love or hate, attack or defense? Can we create a shared space to play creatively with an iconic behavioral and visual component of our collective cultural history?
Instinct #6 - MACHO? is a playground for both artist and observer to examine their feelings about maleness, masculinity, and machismo.
The exhibit takes place September 7-9, Instinct at Village.Berlin, Kurfurstenstrasse 31/32, 10785 Berlin. Curated by Eric LeRouge, Instinct.Berlin#6 features eight artists from a variety of disciplines, including photography, drawing, painting, sound, performance, and video.
Instinct.Berlin is an experimental and collective art project bringing together a network of artists to question masculinities, gender roles and societal expectations through aesthetic experimentation, dialogue and the creation of community. Find out more on their website, Instagram, and Facebook.
