There's always that song. The song that makes you swoon and think about your boyfriend, or remember your first date with your wife. We asked Advocate readers to share the story behind their song with their partner, or spouse, and of course the range of answers is as wide as the Grand Canyon. Let us count the ways.
"I Swear" by All 4 One was our wedding song at our first ceremony back in 1998 and at our "legal" ceremony in 2013. But John Legend's "Stay With You" is our favorite. We are both fans of his and the lyrics are just so perfect, we used this song for our civil union ceremony in 2007 -- yes, you read that right, we have had three ceremonies! How many people can say they married the same person three times!"
--Tom Davis-Walton
As grad students at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, we would often frequent a local campus coffee shop. The song that would be playing would inevitably be "Killing Me Softly" by Roberta Flack. That was 40 years ago. That song remains "our" song to this day. And we are no longer just "partners." We married in California last year.
--Albert Milo
"You're Still The One" by Shania Twain. My partner and I have been together for 21 years and we'll be getting married soon in Florida now that it's finally legal! The song has always been perfect for us, as many in our families have turned against us and said that we'll never make it because our love is wrong. Boy, have we showed them!
--Jennifer Jacobus
Our first dance at the wedding was Bon Jovi's "Bed of Roses." Hubby is a huge Bon Jovi fan. My song for him is Maroon 5's "She Will Be Loved." I've never been as loved as I am by him.
--Elizabeth Bigley Lippincott
We have two: "When Love Takes Over," and "Lullabuy" .... The words just sum up our relationship.
--Dennis Adisano-Sessa
"The Luckiest" by Ben Folds. And he sang it to me at our wedding in October.
--Peter Medwick
Savage Garden, "I Knew I Loved You." (I think I dreamed you into life.) We met at a bar 17 years ago and have literally been together ever since.
--Bryan Beal
Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa's "I'll Take Care of You." The song has the lyrics "I've loved and lost, the same as you, so you see I know just what you've been through, and if you let me here's just what I'll do, I'll take care of you." She has been the only one who can handle my emotional meltdowns, and just holds me. She takes care of me and I take care of her.
--Megan Holloway
"Mirrors" by Justin Timberlake... Our wedding theme song.
--Jason Black Bear
Willy Nelson's "On the Road Again" because we travel long distances to see family and on our trips after filling the tank our grabbing a coffee or making a pit stop one of us will start singing this song. We'll have been together 15 years on April 1, and were married on July 6, 2013. It just keeps getting better for us!
--Timmy D. McCullom
Extreme's "More than Words." I never knew the right words to say anything when we first started dating in college. Then this came on, and it just fit. We've been together for 15 years, and just got married in August.
--Dawn Abraham
"Sailing" by Christopher Cross. We share a passion for sailing.
--Bobbie McArdle Blundell
"Happy Together" by The Turtles was playing on jukebox the night we met.
--Christopher Snyder
"You're the Best Thing that Ever Happened to Me" by Gladys Night & The Pips has been our song for 20 years! We bring out the best in each other, and I'm a better person because of her.
--Lisa Elliott
"At Last," Etta James. At last we were able to get legally married!
--Rachel Esparza
"Crash My Party" by Luke Bryan because my person and I talk on the phone a lot at all hours as we live in different states right now.
--T.C. McCloud
"The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of" By Carly Simon. We met at a Carly Simon concert at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip years ago.
--Billy Livsey
For us it's "Lean On Me." I sang it to him in the shower after the first time we made love. (By the way, not the cheesy hip-hop version.)
--Robert Ellis
"Love bites," Def Leppard... who doesn't love a hickey necklace!
--Ron King
"Can You Feel The Love Tonight," Elton John. We used those three little words to each other for the first time after seeing The Lion King. We had been dating about a month. This June will be 21 years.
--Thomas Phillips
