Terms like "male gaze" and female gaze" have jumped from academia to the mainstream, but is it even possible for artists and filmmakers to create a female gaze in cinema that goes beyond the male gaze that has dominated cinema since its infancy? On the latest The Advocates podcast, filmmaker and Pride Media director of editorial video Allison Tate joins hosts Jessie "Gender" Earl and Tracy E. Gilchrist to discuss the history of the male gaze in cinema as well as what a female, transgender, or lesbian gaze might look like. Films discussed include Carol, Blue Is the Warmest Color, Disobedience, Concussion, Tangerine, A Fantastic Woman, and a few very problematic but instructive Alfred Hitchcock films.
They also find time to gush about their favorite Cate Blanchett and Kristen Stewart photos coming out of the Cannes Film Festival.
