It was a very happy birthday for Schitt's Creek star Dan Levy, who turned 38 on Monday.
The out gay Canadian actor and screenwriter took to Twitter to share something amazing and unexpected that happened on his big day. While Levy himself says he doesn't normally celebrate his birthday, fans of the Schitt's Creek star took it upon themselves to mark the day by organizing a fundraiser for the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta and ended up raising over $50,000.
"Today is my birthday and I would never normally brag about something like that but a group of people on the internet raised over $50,000 for the faculty of native studies on my behalf and I felt absolutely compelled to come here and say thank you so much," said Levy. "Thank you for making my day. Thank you for doing such a good thing. Thanks to everybody who donated and the wonderful people who organized the fundraiser for my birthday. There is good on the internet, who knew?"
The institution is near and dear to Levy's heart. The purpose of the course is to produce graduates "who have respect for Indigenous knowledge, who are educated about Indigenous histories and contemporary issues." Last year, Levy publicly shared that he was taking the free online course to relearn Canadian history from an Indigenous perspective. Many followed suit, with approximately 50,000 fans enrolling in the class as well.
The university reached out on Twitter to wish Levy a happy birthday and to thank his fans for their incredible support. "The happiest of birthday wishes go out to @danjlevy today from all of us at @UANativeStudies. And a HUGE shoutout to all of you who honoured him in the most Dan-way: with generosity & kindness. hiy hiy, miigwetch, mahsi cho, marsi!"
For those interested in donating to the fundraiser, it's still ongoing as of this writing and contributions can be made here.
