Film
Iron Man 2 -- The first Iron Man is generally regarded as one of the best comic book adaptations of all time. And while buzz for the sequel might not be as strong, with a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, and Don Cheadle -- plus stunts and action far as the eye can see -- this is sure to be a must-see for fans of the superhero genre.
Mother and Child -- Director Rodrigo Garcia seamlessly weaves together the stories of a woman who gave up her daughter for adoption as a teen (Annette Bening), that child now all grown up (Naomi Watts), and a married woman eager to adopt (Kerry Washington) in this well-acted, expertly directed drama. Out actress Cherry Jones plays the nun who links the stories, and Bening, Watts, and Washington all offer up Oscar-worthy performances.
Music
"Wait for Me" by Moby -- This is the new single from the sexually ambiguous electronica auteur. The haunting song, out now, is part of the Wait for Me. Remixes! album being released May 17.
Delancey Street by Rachael Sage -- New York independent artist Sage explores her Jewish heritage on this album, her ninth. Musically, Sage is like a little sister to Tori Amos and Kate Bush -- give her a listen. Out May 18.
Lifted Off the Ground by Chely Wright --We all saw Wright's brave coming-out story this week, but have you heard her music? The country star's seventh album reflects her new freedom -- all tracks, save for one, were written by the prolific Kansas native. Out now.
Leave Right Now by Will Young -- The gay British pop star's song "Leave Right Now" is now heard every time an American Idol finalist gets the boot. An accompanying digital album was released this week with that track and seven more.
DVDs
Nine -- Out director Rob Marshall's slow-simmering cinematic take on the award-winning Broadway musical (itself based on the Fellini classic 8 1/2) is sorely lacking the razzle-dazzle of his Chicago. Daniel Day-Lewis is relentlessly anguished and mopey as the film director facing a midlife crisis, but he gets vivid support from a stellar cast of Oscar-winning ladies including Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz, and Marion Cotillard, yet surprisingly it's Fergie who provides the real sizzle with her showstopping number "Be Italian."
One Night Only: Barbra Streisand and Quartet at the Village Vanguard -- Multihyphenate entertainer Streisand dons her late-night jazz chanteuse hat in this CD/DVD combo that records for posterity her concert in New York's famed but very intimate music venue the Village Vanguard last fall. The entertainer performs material from her recent Love Is the Answer album as well as many of her beloved hits before an appreciative audience made up mostly of her celebrity friends.
Taking Chances World Tour: Celine Dion -- The pop superstar performs 18 of her favorite songs, including a soul medley that honors James Brown and Stevie Wonder and gives the thrush a workout on the gay anthem "Lady Marmalade," in a CD/DVD combo that was recorded during her recent tour extravaganza.
