Movies
Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. She's honest, she's funny, and she's a living (and working!) pioneer for both women and men on the comedy scene. It's 84 minutes of pure Joan Rivers.
The A-Team. This movie is not nearly as solid as the campy action-drama that was the 1980s television show, but the characters blow up enough stuff and Bradley Cooper is good-looking enough to make it worth taking a peek. Or you cannot watch it, since filming this movie apparently made Rampage Jackson "soft." We pity the fool who gets caught saying something homophobic to a reporter.
NewFest. And if you're in the New York City area, check out the tail end of NewFest, the area's top LGBT film festival. Saturday and Sunday's films include 8: The Mormon Proposition, Le Tigre: On Tour, and shorts programs "Girls on Film," "LOL," and "Boys Will Be Boys."
Music
Body Talk Pt. 1 by Robyn
With songs like "Fembot" and the explosive "Dancing on My Own," Swedish pop diva Robyn is back with Body Talk Pt.1, the first of three albums she's putting out this year. Robyn says the music will feature insight to her most personal thoughts; expect a feel-good time with substance. Out Tuesday.
Lillith 2010 Tour Compilation
Featuring artists like Tegan and Sara, Kelly Clarkson, Sarah McLachlan, Corinne Bailey Rae, Rihanna, Colbie Caillat, and Sara Bareillis, the female-centric festival's compilation album showcases an eclectic set of hit songs. The album serves as a preview of the tour -- slated to kick off June 27 in Calgary after a hiatus of 11 years. Out Tuesday.
Laws of Illusion by Sarah McLachlan
This will be a busy summer for the Canadian songbird as she returns with new album Laws of Illusion, in addition to appearing at Lillith Fair. Laws is the singer's first new work in seven years and will offer a pleasant break for pop aficionados tired of the Gaga-style beats currently invading the airwaves. Out Tuesday.
DVDs
Before Stonewall/After Stonewall: 25th Anniversary Edition. Subtitled "The Making of a Gay and Lesbian Community," the two documentaries included in this two-disc set offer a comprehensive look at the events leading up to the historic raid in 1969 on New York's Stonewall Inn and the subsequent riot, as well as the defeats and victories that have followed into the new century. Interviews with notables such as Barney Frank, Allen Ginsberg, and Larry Kramer help make this required viewing.
Cinema Pride Collection. Ten colorful, defining, and iconic films are compiled here in the very first gay-themed film DVD collection from a major motion picture studio. From the tortured characters in the tragic The Children's Hour to the in-your-face stance in the celebratory The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and award-winning ripped-from-the-headlines tales like Boys Don't Cry, nearly every facet of the LGBT experience is represented in this collection.
Happy Together. Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar-wai chronicles a doomed love between two men who relocate to Buenos Aires for a fresh start. This 1997 film is poetic, stylish, and already considered a modern classic. It's now available on Blu-ray.
Showgirls: 15th Anniversary Sinsational Edition. This lusty, Las Vegas update on All About Eve offers unforgettable performances from Elizabeth Berkley and Gina Gershon, some of the most insanely quotable dialogue this side of Valley of the Dolls, and catfights galore. Let the viewing parties begin as this gay fave makes its debut on Blu-ray.
