Transamerica, TransGeneration, The L
Word, actress Charlize Theron, and rocker Melissa
Etheridge were just some of the winners at the
17th annual Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against
Defamation's Media Awards Saturday in Los Angeles.
Transamerica took home the award for
outstanding film in limited release, while Showtime's The
L Word was honored as outstanding drama
series. NBC's Will & Grace, about to end
its long television run, won the award for outstanding
comedy series.
TransGeneration, which aired on the Sundance
and Logo channels, was chosen as outstanding documentary for
its study of transgender college students.
Theron, who
played lesbian serial killer Aileen Wuornos in
Monster, received the Vanguard Award, which is
awarded to media professionals who through their work have
increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT
community.
Etheridge was
given the Stephen F. Kolzak Award for openly gay media
professionals who bring about positive change.
The awards will
be televised on Logo, MTV Networks' cable channel with
all-LGBT programming, on Saturday, April 15, and on VH1
on Sunday, April 16. (The Advocate)
