Modern Family executive producer Steve Levitan said the gay couple played by Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson were always bound to kiss.

Last week it was revealed that new dads Mitchell (Ferguson, pictured left) and Cam would share a kiss on the ABC sitcom early in the second season. The couple's lack of affectionate displays led to a Facebook campaign from fans and a jab from Glee creator Ryan Murphy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter,"Exec producer Steve Levitan said Saturday at the BAFTA Tea party to honor Emmy nominees it was 'unfortunate' that the characters' liplocking had become an issue, since the show's writers had intended all along to create such a scene 'as part of the natural development of the show.'"

Levitan did not offer details about the timing or witnesses of the kiss, but he did say it would have "a very nice twist."

The Reporter adds that Stonestreet, who along with Mitchell is nominated for a best supporting actor Emmy on Sunday, also downplayed the fuss. At a reception Friday he said the characters displayed affection throughout the season.
