10. EVENT: Golden GRRRLS, A Night of 100 Drag Performers
On June 3 at the Epic Event Center in Minneapolis -- which The Advocate recently named the gayest city in America -- headliner Jackie Beat, cohost Todd Walker, and DJ Wendy Hunt will lead a parade of queens who plan to break the Guinness world record for the most drag artists in a single performance. All proceeds will benefit the Aliveness Project, which provides services and programs to people with HIV or AIDS.
9. DVD: Burning Palms
Among the twisted and taboo-filled L.A. stories in this edgy directorial debut by out filmmaker Christopher B. Landon -- Disturbia writer and son of Michael Landon -- Six Feet Under's Peter Macdissi and Corpus Christi's Anson Mount play a wealthy West Hollywood gay couple who decide to bring home the ultimate accessory, a African child, for all the wrong reasons. Shannen Doherty, Dylan McDermott, and Zoe Saldana costar.
8. TV: Platinum Hit
Kara DioGuardi and Jewel judge this new songwriting competition, which debuts May 30 on Bravo, in which a dozen musicians compete to win $100,000, a publishing deal with songwriting collective the Writing Camp, and a recording deal with RCA/Jive. Hopefuls include out New Orleans native Scotty Granger, great-nephew of gospel great Mahalia Jackson, who currently lives in Los Angeles and counts Elton John among his musical influences.
7. DVD: Never Apologize and Public Speaking
Check out these funny, fascinating docs about great gay minds. In Mike Kaplan's Never Apologize, Malcolm McDowell pays solo tribute to controversial British director Lindsay Anderson, a "celibate homosexual" who fell in love with his male leads. Directed by Martin Scorsese, Public Speaking lets legendary writer and wit Fran Lebowitz riff on everything, including the idea that smoking has become more deviant than being gay.
6. TV: Million Dollar Decorators
Real estate porn alert! Debuting May 31 on Bravo, this stylish new docu-series about the competitive world of high-end interior design in Los Angeles includes three handsome and philanthropic gay designers: Martyn Bullard, Jeffrey Alan Marks, and Nathan Turner. Designers Mary McDonald and Kathryn Ireland round out the cast with Real Housewives looks and attitude to match their extremely wealthy, famous, and demanding clients.
5. DVD: Violet Tendencies
Mindy Cohn, best known as Natalie on the '80s sitcom The Facts of Life, is a scream as Violet, a self-described "fag hag" swarmed and sometimes stifled by her gay male friends in Manhattan. Directed by Casper Andreas and penned by Out columnist Jesse Archer -- collaborators on films like Slutty Summer and A Four Letter Word -- this unconventional rom-com is jam-packed with buff eye-candy, gut-busting one-liners, and surprising heart.
4. MUSIC: Daylight, Matt Doyle
Currently starring in Broadway's War Horse, out performer Matt Doyle has just released his soulful debut EP, which was fully funded by fans through Kickstarter.com and includes a sultry cover of Sam Cooke's "Lost and Lookin'." The 24-year-old Spring Awakening alum -- better known to Gossip Girl fans as Eric's boyfriend, Jonathan -- will also star in Private Romeo, an upcoming gay film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.
3. FILM: We Are the Night (Wir Sind die Nacht)
Dennis Gansel's delicious German-language thriller, which opens May 27 in New York, is the most exciting new addition to the vampire genre in years. Nina Hoss takes big bites out of the scenery as Louise, the glamorous leader of a hot, hard-partying female vampire trio in Berlin. The fangs come out when she falls dangerously in love with a newly turned tomboy -- The Reader's Karoline Herfurth -- who doesn't return her sexual advances.
2. DVD: True Blood: The Complete Third Season
Available May 31 on DVD, the third season of out creator Alan Ball's smart and sexy HBO vampire fangtasia was a charm, thanks to Denis O'Hare and Theo Alexander as a vampire couple; unexpected gay fantasy sequences; beefed-up parts for Kristin Bauer and Evan Rachel Wood as bisexual vamps Pam and Sophie-Anne; a beau for Lafayette; and more skin than ever from Ryan Kwanten, Alexander Skarsgard, and Joe Manganiello.
1. THEATER: Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City: A New Musical
Wesley Taylor and Josh Breckenridge star as Michael "Mouse" Tolliver and Jon Fielding, one of literature's most memorable gay couples, in this musical adaptation of Maupin's landmark novel series. The San Francisco-set show, which features a book by Avenue Q scribe Jeff Whitty and a score by Jake Shears and John Garden of the Scissor Sisters, fittingly opens May 31 at San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater.
