It will soon be showtime once again for Jem and the Holograms, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The beloved animated series, based on the classic Hasbro toy line from the 1980s, is getting a live action movie makeover that is expected to start production this spring.
G.I. Joe Retaliation director Jon M. Chu will helm the film, which is being produced by Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions.
The announcement was made via YouTube today along with an unusual yet potentially welcome request from the filmmakers. They are asking fans of the series and original toy line to send in their thoughts on everything from costume designs and music to script suggestions and casting choices for the live-action adaptation.
Jem has long been referred to as a gay icon by many LGBT fans of the series. The original show that followed the adventures of record company owner Jerrica Benton -- who is secretly the glamorous rock star Jem thanks to a hologram-projecting supercomputer named Synergy -- quickly became a ratings smash and inspired a generation of gay boys and girls.
"I think a lot of gay boys were attracted to the music and the fashion and to all of the creative aspects of the show," Samantha Newark, the voice actress who played Jem/Jerrica in the '80s animated series, told Gay.net in a 2011 interview. "I have a lot of gay friends and they're all very creative and I'm sure the show appealed to that sensibility."
