The American Film Institute will showcase a variety of filmmaking voices in this year's AFI Docs Film Festival, which includes feature documentaries as well as short films. AFI Docs runs June 17-21 at selected theaters in Washington, D.C., and includes three LGBT pieces. The three documentaries explore homophobia in sports, anger as activism, and the transition a whole family goes through when a parent comes out as trans.
From This Day Forward
Thursday, June 18, 3:45 p.m., AFI Silver / Friday, June 19, 6:45 p.m., Landmark
Directed by Sharon Shattuck, From This Day Forward delves into the complicated relationship of Shattuck's parents after one of them came out as transgender. During her adolescent years, Shattuck's father, Trisha, disclosed her new female identity to the family. Despite all of this, Trisha and Shattuck's heterosexual mother continued their marriage, which prompts Shattuck to use her storytelling skills to reveal the intricacies of love, marriage, and identity.
Out to Win
Thursday, June 18, 8:15 p.m., AFI Silver / Friday, June 19, 9:00 p.m., Landmark
Directed by Malcolm Ingram, Out to Win features conversations with renowned professional athletes such as Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, and WNBA player Brittney Griner. The film examines their trials, tribulations, and triumphs after coming out in a homophobic environment.
Larry Kramer in Love & Anger

Jean Carlomusto's documentary focuses on one of the most outspoken figures in LGBT activism, Larry Kramer.Among many of his credentials, Kramer wrote the award-winning play The Normal Heart and the 1969 film Women in Love. Kramer's greatest work so far is his advocacy during the AIDS crisis when he fought for government intervention.
