10. DVD: Friends With Kids
Jennifer Westfeldt, still best known as an actress for playing the lez-curious single lady in Kissing Jessica Stein, writes and directs this talky ensemble comedy about two longtime friends who decide to go halves on a baby. A bevy of Bridesmaids costars, including Westfeldt's boyfriend Jon Hamm, Maya Rudolph, Chris O'Dowd, and the great Kristen Wiig do what they can to elevate the sometimes shrill material.
9. DVD: The Beat Hotel
Exhausted and outraged following the landmark obscenity trials surrounding his poem Howl, Allen Ginsberg fled to Paris in 1957 with lover Peter Orlovsky and close friend Gregory Corso to take refuge at a cheap hotel in the city's Latin Quarter. Alan Govenar's documentary vividly combines vintage footage, photographs, interviews, and stylized dramatic re-creations to recall a fascinating period in Beat history. Available on DVD Tuesday.
8. THEATER: Mommie Queerest
The rocky relationship between Hollywood's most notorious mother, Joan Crawford, and most put-upon daughter--that would be Christina--gets yet another twist. Playwright Jamie Morris, who also portrays Crawford, speculated on how their infamous struggles would have played out had the great screen star actually been a man. Through September 1 at Provincetown's Art House. For more information go to PtownArtHouse.com.
7. MUSIC: "Pieces of Gold," Aiku
Like us, you probably wish the music in porn was better. The French electropop band Aikiu does as well. In the video for its Daft Punk-ian song "Pieces of Gold," the band snagged some vintage gay porn clips and spliced them with images of band members playing their instruments. Watch the possibly NSFW video here.
6. PERFORMANCE: Liza: Live in Concert
Start spreading the news ... renowned tribute artist Peter Mac will move on from his long run as Judy Garland, whom he's honored with sell-out shows for a decade, and pull on the bowler hat and spangled Halston originals to perform as her daughter Liza. Thursdays and Fridays beginning July 19 at Peter Mac's Supper Club. For more information go to FriendOfJudy.com.
5. MUSIC: "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)," P!nk
This empowering breakup anthem with its swear word-filled chorus marks the first single from P!nk's sixth studio album, The Truth About Love, which is due in September.
4. BOOK: Project Runway: The Show That Changed Fashion
This lavishly illustrated tome (Weinstein Books, $25) features insightful commentary from Heidi Klum about the beginning of the influential program, plus interviews with Tim Gunn, Michael Kors, and Nina Garcia--there's something here for all fans of the long-running series to savor.
3. MUSIC: "White Light," George Michael
"Was it music that saved me or the way that you prayed for me," asks the 49-year-old entertainer in his latest single, a hypnotic, pulsating response to his recent near-death experience.
2. TV: Political Animals
Wonder who inspired this latest iconic turn from Sigourney Weaver as Elaine Barrish Hammond, a pantsuited former first lady who ran for president and becomes secretary of state? Credit creator Greg Berlanti for making one of Hammond's hot twin sons (James Yolk, Sebastian Stan) gay. Watch a clip here. Sundays at 10 p.m. on USA.
1. MUSIC: "Before You," Cheyenne Jackson
"I was lost in my head, trying to forget," Jackson sings in this buoyant love song, the second single from the heartthrob's new album, Drive. Watch the swoony black-and-white video, which features Rachel Dratch resembling Norma Desmond and the Bride of Frankenstein in a crazy hat.
