10. DVD: Season 1, Whitney
The titular Whitney Cummings is a brash lady comic that men (straight) men seemingly do not get, but we do. This set, released Tuesday, is the perfect intro to Whit and her pals, including Maulik Pancholy (Jack's sort-of-gay assistant on 30 Rock) as a bisexual man who comes out mid-season.
9. TELEVISION: Underemployed
These young career characters are one year out from college and racking up the credit card debt while trying to break into their dream jobs or out of an unpaid internship. The first episode of MTV's newest series has Sofia, the show's narrator, on a date with Laura. We don't know if she's a lesbian, and apparently neither does she. Underemployed premieres Tuesday at 10/9 Central.
8. DVD: Season 7, Bones
Lesbians love this show, released on DVD Tuesday, because it combines two things we love: strong (sexy) female characters and mystery. And pretty much everyone wants to stare at David Boreanaz as FBI agent Booth. Emily Deschanel leads the cast of forensic scientists solving gruesome homicide cases, but the heart of the show is bisexual artist Angela (played by the gorgeous Michaela Conlin). She's married, so we rarely see her sapphic side anymore, but that doesn't make her any less queer. Bonus: never-before-seen footage.
7. THEATER: Evoke Festival
Los Angeles's East West Players group this weekend hosts a performance festival showcasing LGBT Asian-Pacific American voices. There will be post-show discussions, and Sunday's matinee will be preceded by a bring-your-own brunch (food trucks will be available too, if you don't want to brown-bag it) in the theater's courtyard. Check here for more information.
6. MUSIC: Come Home to Mama, Martha Wainwright
Not just Rufus's sister, Martha is a talented singer-songwriter in her own right. She's back Tuesday with her third studio album, recorded at Sean Lennon's New York studio; Lennon appears as a guest musician. The first single, "Proserpina," was written by Wainwright's mother, Kate McGarrigle, who passed away in 2010.
5. THEATER: 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche
Audiences will get another chance to see the popular farce that won the award for Outstanding Production at this summer's FringeNYC festival when it gets a six-week run at New York City's SoHo Playhouse. The play has the members of the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein gathering for their annual quiche breakfast in the repressed environment of 1956 and confronting the enemies of the day -- Communism and the closet. Opens Saturday and runs through November 20.
4. BOOKS: A Kick Against the Pricks, David Norris
The former candidate for president in Ireland nearly broke the world's pink ceiling, as he almost became the first openly gay man to be elected to such a high office. The Dublin senator who helped decriminalize homosexuality in his country writes in candid detail in his new autobiography, released Thursday, about the homophobic scandals that led to his defeat. He's also a Joycean scholar known for no-holds-barred rhetoric, so it's a good read.
3. MUSIC: Two Eleven, Brandy
The pop/R&B/reality star had a comeback earlier this year with her hit "Put It Down" --yes, it was a duet with Chris Brown, but we won't hold that against the sweet Moesha star. Her new album, Two Eleven, is out Tuesday. It's named not only for Brandy's birthday but also the day her friend and idol, Whitney Houston, passed away.
2. FILM: Gayby
When a perpetually single straight girl and her gay best friend decide to have a baby -- make that a gayby -- it seems like a modern family match made in heaven. Of course, there's the minor issue of the mechanics involved in actually making that gayby, and both future parents are scrambling to get their lives together before the little bundle of joy arrives. The irreverent comedy, starring Jenn Harris and Matthew Wilkas, opens in New York theaters today and in Los Angeles October 26. Watch the trailer.
1. TELEVISION: American Horror Story: Aslyum
The show's out creator, Ryan Murphy, has brought back Emmy Award-winner Jessica Lange in a new role as Sister Jude for the second season. This time she's a nun at the Briarcliff Asylum instead of a neighbor to a haunted house. The amazing cast includes Zachary Quinto as a psychiatrist, James Cromwell as a physician, Joseph Fiennes as the monsignor, plus Adam Levine as a photographer and Sarah Paulson, Chloe Sevigny, and Kit Walker as inmates. It premieres Wednesday at 10 p.m. on FX.
