Karla Sofía Gascón made history at the Golden Globes Sunday night, accepting the award for Best Picture - Musical or Comedy for Emilia Pérez.
An emotional Gascón, who was the first out trans actor to be nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress, spoke at the 82nd Golden Globes after the film she starred in took home the final award of the night for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy.
"I chose these colors tonight, the Buddhist colors, because I have a message for you. The light always wins over darkness" Gascón said, accepting the award after director Jacques Audiard turned the microphone over to his film's star. "I have a lot of things to say to you. You can maybe put us in jail, you can beat us up, but you can never take away our soul, our existence, our identity. And I want to say to you, raise your voice, and freedom, and say 'I am who I am, not who you want.'"
