Star Wars and The Wedding Banquet star Kelly Marie Tran has officially come out!
Tran, who rose to fame playing the character Rose Tico in the Star Wars films and voiced Raya in the Disney film Raya and the Last Dragon is next starring in a remake of Ang Lee's queer rom-com The Wedding Banquet, and in talking with Entertainment Weekly, she's now come out!
"I haven't said this publicly yet, but I'm a queer person," Tran said.
"The thing that really excited me about it was I got to play a person that I felt like I knew," Tran said about starring in The Wedding Banquet, by queer filmmaker Andrew Ahn (Fire Island). "I don't feel like I'm acting at all in this movie."
"I'm here doing this amazing movie with these amazing people," she continued. "I've never been in a queer space before. I've truly never felt this accepted."
The Wedding Banquet stars Tran as Angela, a woman trying to have a baby with her girlfriend (Lily Gladstone), who comes up with a plan with her friend Min to have a fake wedding so he can get a green card and she can raise money for IVF treatment. The film also stars Bowen Yang.
When Tran starred in Raya, she said she supported a queer reading of the character.
"I'm obsessed with Namaari [the other female lead in the film] and I'm obsessed with Gemma Chan," so I'm really excited you brought this up," Tran told Vanity Fair about a queer reading of the character. "I think if you're a person watching this movie and you see representation in a way that feels really real and authentic to you, then it is real and authentic. I think it might get me in trouble for saying that, but whatever."
Congratulations!
