Calling all trangels... Kerri Colby has arrived.
Fans will remember Colby's bright light as a contestant on season 14 of RuPaul's Drag Race. The queen won over the hearts of the audience as she shared her wisdom and personal story as a transgender woman on the show.
"When I look back at my life, I've always chosen to see things as the glass half full. You really realize the power of that perspective and it really becomes second nature to you when you've hit a rock bottom," Colby tells The Advocate.
Growing up as a trans woman, Colby found herself homeless and ostracized by her own family.
"I can honestly say that I feel like my life rock bottom happened to me at 15. You can ultimately learn to build yourself up from what you have. When you start to do that, everywhere you go forward beyond that... you're going to have gratitude, you're going to have thankfulness in your heart, and you're going to feel some degree of blessed."
Colby will now share her life advice on a larger scale with her brand new show Kerri Kares. The star will answer questions from fans and offer tips to become a more self-realized person.
"World of Wonder reached out to me. A lot of people really felt impacted and loved me [from Drag Race]. How can I help my past self, who is being mirrored to me, through all of these beautiful people? I want to actually give a voice to my own community, to my own supporters, to my Kare Bears."
While she made a huge splash on season 14, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree as Colby's mother, Sasha Colby, continues to dominate on the current seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race. Like her daughter, Sasha Colby is a proud trans woman.
"She's the backbone. She's the spine, but she's also the head. I'm just so excited to see how she keeps slaying it. As we get less and less queens and people get more and more time, I want to hear her say more and more."
Beyond the House of Colby representation on Drag Race, the trans community also saw a recent victory on the Grammy stage when Kim Petras and Sam Smith took home the trophy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Kim Petras is a trans woman, while Sam Smith is nonbinary. The duo made history as Petras is the first trans woman to win the Grammy in that category.
"I was very very excited. It's really amazing to see them come together and collaborate. We're using our own weapons that are formed against us to prosper," Colby said. "We are taking what people call us and say about us and put us down for... and we're making that our pride song. We're making that our victory. It was such a good moment and I also think that it deserved everything that it got. I hope that we see more trans representation in music and at the Grammys."
