Daisha has long been one of hip-hop and R&B's most sought-after backup dancers. Yet as she racked up more and more gigs dancing alongside the pop elite such as Beyonce, Rihanna, and Jill Scott, Daisha realized she had her own music inside her -- and it was bursting to come out.
So the stunning artist and LGBT ally left the commercial dance world to strike out on her own as a singer. She's spent the last few years refining her sound, and now, The Advocate is pleased to present the exclusive debut of Daisha's new single, "Hiyah (F.O.H.)," which appears on her upcoming EP Skin Out -- A Tribe Called Daisha.
The song, Daisha tells The Advocate, is all about being a woman, or rather, breaking out from under the expectations our culture has of women. "There is a box that society has built for women. I've never been that chick," she says. "Women get angry ... We express ourselves. We are sensual. Powerful," she says. "Hiyah" is an example of the many sides of my self."
In the video she's surrounded by her own backup dancers, a group of talented gay men called the Tribe, who are also a part of Daisha's live performances, including a recent set over Pride weekend in New York City.
"I've never felt the gay community to be separate from myself," says Daisha. "I've been involved in the arts my entire life. Some of my greatest mentors and friends are gay. I celebrate equality and love in every facet. This is where the Tribe comes from. Their community is mine and mine is theirs. "
