Comedian and actor Robin Williams died in his home Monday at the age of 63. His death may have been a suicide, though that has yet to be confirmed by the Marin County, Calif., coroner.

Williams was found dead this morning due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made.

"Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late," his publicist said in a statement Monday morning. "This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time."

Williams won an Oscar for his role in the Gus Van Sant-directed Good Will Hunting, but also played multiple roles with an LGBT bent, including Armand in The Birdcage, the cross-dressing Mrs. Doubtfire, and most recently a middle-aged man whose sexual awaking unfolds in director Dito Montiel's Boulevard. Another gay director he worked for more recently was Lee Daniels, as Williams played President Eisenhower in The Butler.

In The World According to Garp, in which Williams made his mark as a serious actor, there was a major transgender character, Roberta Muldoon, a former football player who was a friend of Garp, the title character played by Williams. John Lithgow played Roberta.

As a resident of Marin County, which is in the San Francisco Bay area, Williams supported local efforts by LGBT community groups and was involved in multiple fundraisers and events.
