Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein discuss their upcoming stage musical adaptation of Kinky Boots with director Jerry Mitchell and stars Billy Porter and Stark Sands.
The show, based on the 2005 British comedy about a drag queen who saves a failing shoe factory, will pair music and lyrics by Lauper with a book by Fierstein, who previously wrote Torch Song Trilogy and the book for the musical adaptation of La Cage aux Folles. Mitchell, celebrated for his work with the annual Broadway Bares benefit for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and for his work on both Hairspray and the 2005 revival of La Cage, will direct and choreograph the new show.
Sands will star as Charlie, the shoemaker in trouble, while Porter, who memorably played Belize in the recent revival of Angels in America, will portray Lola, the feisty drag queen, who becomes Charlie's unlikely business partner. The musical will open October 2 in Chicago's Bank of America theatre ahead of an expected Broadway run.
