Kinky Boots gets 13 noms, Lane is nominated for The Nance, and Kramer will receive an award for his activism.
Nathan Lane, David Hyde Pierce, Harvey Fierstein, Cyndi Lauper, and Larry Kramer are among the many gay and gay-friendly nominees and honorees announced today for this year's Tony Awards, which will be presented June 9.
Lane and Hyde Pierce are both nominated for Best Actor in a Play, for The Nance and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, respectively. They're up against Tom Hanks for Lucky Guy, Tracy Letts for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Tom Sturridge for Orphans.
Fierstein and Lauper are nominated for their contributions to Kinky Boots, about a shoe manufacturer who revitalizes his business by catering to drag performers. Fierstein is nominated for Best Book of a Musical and Lauper for Best Original Score. The show has 13 nominations, the most for any production this year, including Best Musical as well as two nods for Jerry Mitchell, for his direction and choreography.
Kramer, a longtime AIDS activist and author of The Normal Heart and other plays, will receive the Isabelle Stevenson Award, a noncompetitive award presented to a theater artist who has "made a substantial contribution of volunteered time and effort on behalf of one or more humanitarian, social service, or charitable organizations, regardless of whether such organizations relate to the theater."
Gay playwrights dominate the Best Play category, capturing three of four nominations: Richard Greenberg for The Assembled Parties, Colm Toibin for The Testament of Mary, and Christopher Durang for Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. The fourth nominee is the late Nora Ephron for Lucky Guy.
Other out nominees include Douglas Carter Beane for Best Book of a Musical, for Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella, and George C. Wolfe for his direction of Lucky Guy. Longtime straight ally Judith Light is up for Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Play, for The Assembled Parties.
