Nathan Lane Will Be a Nance on PBS

One of Nathan Lane's most flamboyant stage performances will sashay into homes this fall.

A filmed version of out playwright Douglas Carter Beane's The Nance, produced on Broadway last year by Lincoln Center Theater, will be presented October 10 as part of the 2014 PBS Arts Fall Festival. The Nance screened at select movie theatres earlier this summer.

Lane, a two-time Tony Award winner, stars as Chauncey Miles, a famous "nance," which is an outrageously effeminate stock burlesque character. The play is set in 1930s New York, where the mayor has begun cracking down on homosexual "deviants." The cast, which features Jonny Orsini as Chauncey's younger lover, also includes Jenni Barber, Andrea Burns, Cady Huffman, Mylinda Hull, Geoffrey Allen Murphy, and Lewis J. Stadlen.

The Advocate named the Tony-winning comedic drama, which was directed by out Broadway veteran Jack O'Brien, one of its top 10 LGBT-inclusive shows of 2013, calling it Beane's "most satisfying play since The Little Dog Laughed."

This year's PBS Arts Fall Festival will also feature a presentation of Michael Feinstein at the Rainbow Room, which will air October 31. Emmy- and Grammy-nominated crooner Michael Feinstein headlines the evening with performances by Tony winner Christine Ebersole, American Idol's Jessica Sanchez, the Manzari Brothers, Oscar nominee June Squibb, and more.

Other festival highlights include Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek LIVE! and Hitmakers, an in-depth look at the changing music industry, featuring Melissa Etheridge.

Tony and Emmy winner Kristin Chenoweth, an outspoken LGBT ally, will host the festival and take the spotlight in Kristin Chenoweth: Coming Home, a career-spanning concert filmed in her Oklahoma hometown.

"PBS' commitment to the arts, and stature as the only destination for quality arts programming on television is cemented with this fall's robust, diverse lineup," says PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger in a statement.

"The Festival showcases great star power, diversity and fantastic performances," adds Donald Thoms, PBS vice president of programming and festival curator. "With Kristin Chenoweth as our host and guide, we expect these shows to resonate with audiences who seek out classic Broadway performances, contemporary hits and a vast array of musical genres with some of the most legendary artists of our time."

The 2014 PBS Arts Fall Festival kicks off September 26 with a presentation of Live From Lincoln Center's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street In Concert with the New York Philharmonic, which stars Bryn Terfel, Emma Thompson, Christian Borle, and Audra McDonald.
