It Shoulda Been You, a wedding-themed musical comedy directed by David Hyde Pierce in his Broadway directorial debut, will bow this spring.

With music by Barbara Anselmi and a book and lyrics by Brian Hargrove, Pierce's husband, It Shoulda Been You will begin previews March 17 and officially open April 14, 2015, at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.

David Burtka, who recently married longtime partner Neil Patrick Harris, will star in the new musical. The cast also includes Tony winner Tyne Daly, Tony winner Harriet Harris, Sierra Boggess, Lisa Howard, Edward Hibbert, and Steve Rosen.

It Shoulda Been You, which premiered in 2011 at New Jersey's George Street Playhouse, is about "a culture clash for the ages when two families from wildly different backgrounds come together to celebrate a wedding," according to a press release about the production. "As if the union wasn't complicated enough, the bride's ex-boyfriend arrives, bringing the wedding to a screeching halt and throwing both families into hysterical chaos. Plots are hatched, promises broken, secrets exposed -- and the bride's resourceful sister is left to turn an unmitigated disaster into happily ever after."

It was announced last month that Neil Patrick Harris will direct Burtka in an upcoming solo cabaret act, Burtka, David, at New York's 54 Below.

Burtka, a trained chef, notably appeared as Tulsa opposite Bernadette Peters in the 2003 Broadway revival of Gypsy. He also starred off-Broadway in Edward Albee's The Play About the Baby.

Pierce, a four-time Emmy winner for his work on Frasier and a Tony winner for his performance in Curtains, was last seen on Broadway in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. His other Broadway credits include Spamalot, La Bete, and Beyond Therapy.

On his decision to begin speaking publicly about Hargrove and their marriage, Pierce told The Advocate in 2011, "However it ended up happening for me, because I was completely honest and because I did come out -- even though I resisted that phrase for so many years -- I feel I'm a better person, and I'm better able to do everything I do both in my private life and in my professional life."
