Even the title kicks ass.
War Lesbian, an original musical by Kristine Haruna Lee and Kathryn Hathaway, will have its world premiere next month in New York City.
Directed by Jordan Fein in collaboration with the theatrical ensemble harunalee, the musical will play seven performances December 5-20 at Dixon Place, which commissioned the new work.
War Lesbian is "about womanhood that floods the stage with impossible probabilities, ridiculous heartbreak, and a surgically precise amount of absurdity, in which anything, and that means anything, goes," according to press notes about the production. "A universe where Ellen DeGeneres is a demonic demi-god and digging for truths and covering up holes can cause wars."
According to Lee, War Lesbian is based on an Inuit myth about the goddess Sedna. "She's a ravenous woman who defies the taboos of her culture," she explains in a Kickstarter video. "Sedna, for us, represents contemporary women who are radically free from prescribed roles and are engaged in this constant state of fight just to exist."
Led by God Hates This Show: Shirley Phelps-Roper In Concert, Live from Hell star Erin Markey, the cast of War Lesbian includes Lee, Jessica Almasy, Preston Martin, Stephanie A. Hsu, Chris Tyler, Derek Smith, Andrew R. Butler, Cyndi Perzcek, and Amir Wachterman.
