Fun Home, the musical based on the award-winning graphic novel by out author Alison Bechdel, lands 12 nominations.
This morning, Bruce Willis and Mary-Louise Parker announced the nominees for the 2015 Tony Awards. It was a big day for musicals: Fun Home, with 12 nominations, tied with An American in Paris. Making his Broadway debut as a director, Christopher Wheeldon was nominated for Best Direction of a Musical as well as Best Choreography for An American in Paris (which also scored a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for Max von Essen). Lisa Kron was nominated for Best Book of a Musical as well as her lyrics for the score for Fun Home that she cowrote with Jeanine Tesori. Terrence McNally was nominated for Best Book of a Musical for The Visit, starring Chita Rivera. McNally's other Broadway hit of the season, It's Only a Play, was recognized with one nomination: for actor Micah Stock for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play. Stephen Hoggett was nominated for Best Choreography for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
It was announced yesterday that John Cameron Mitchell would receive a special Tony Award (he was not eligible for a Tony when Hedwig and the Angry Inch was nominated last year), along with Stephen Schwartz, who will receive the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award.
The 2015 Tony Awards will be broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City, Sunday, June 7, on CBS. Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming will host.
