Eight months after replacing Stephen Colbert on Comedy Central, Larry Wilmore is proving he has the chops for poking fun at the likes of antigay Kentucky clerk Kim Davis.
Although Jon Stewart left a hole in the late night comedy lineup that nobody else can really fill, The Nightly Show's Wilmore is doing a great job of being brilliantly snarky about current events. The best evidence yet is Wednesday night's segment, where he annihilated all of the crazy conservative comparisons of Davis to the iconic civil rights leader, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
"Martin Luther King was actually in opposition to the Church's unwillingness to support the oppressed. Kim Davis on the other hand is using her church to oppress people even more," Wilmore said of Davis, who was released from jail earlier this week after being found in contempt of court for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in her native Rowan County, Ky.
"Going to jail for what you believe in does not necessarily put you on par with Martin Luther King," he continued. "Jeffrey Dahmer was in jail because he believed in eating people. That doesn't make him a freedom fighter!"
