Two days after Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump said that creating gender-neutral bathrooms would be "incredibly expensive," the candidate appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday to discuss transgender rights.
Kimmel asks Trump to defend a position he stated on April 21 when he said that North Carolina should not have passed its anti-LGBT law, House Bill 2, which prohibits transgender people from using public restrooms or locker rooms (in government and public buildings) that match their gender identity.
The presidential hopeful said, at the time, that transgender people should use the bathroom that "they feel is appropriate." In the same interview, Trump went on to say that Caitlyn Jenner was welcome to use whichever bathroom she wanted, if she were to visit one of his properties. The I Am Cait reality star took him up on the offer and filmed herself entering a woman's restroom at a Trump Hotel in New York.
Trump has since backtracked on his statements that trans people should be free to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity. On Jimmy Kimmel Live, Trump told the late-night host that it is an issue that should be left for the states to decide. Kimmel pushed the Republican candidate to answer whether he didn't support the position his party is taking on transgender rights, saying, "Do you personally support it? I think you do."
"What I support is let the states decide and I think the states will do, hopefully, the right thing," said Trump, ignoring the question. The late night host asked Trump, "And what's the right thing?"
The audience erupted in laughter when Trump fumbled and responded by saying, "I don't know yet. I mean, I don't know. Honestly, I don't know."
