The San Francisco 49er refused to stand for the National Anthem and a firestorm ensued.
Mixed-race footballer Colin Kaepernick is facing heat from sensitive white folks offended by his refusal to stand up for the National Anthem during a recent game. The San Francisco 49er made it clear why he was not getting vertical:
"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."
While conservatives and Donald Trump supporters railed on Kaepernick, many LGBT folks expressed solidarity. Here's a round-up.
Colin Kaepernick may have finally made football interesting:
“Colin Kaepernick is my favorite NFL player and I have no idea whether he's good at football”— Cameron Esposito (@Cameron Esposito) 1472592447
“No one on ESPN seems to get the irony of caring about what Kaepernick's "owner" thinks of his actions.”— river buddy butcher 🤠 (@river buddy butcher 🤠) 1472559373
Guy Branum was responding to a different tweet from the Don, but we hear you, Guy, we hear you.
“@realDonaldTrump Colin Kaepernick doesn't need to find a better country. He is busy making one. Please learn something.”— Guy Branum (@Guy Branum) 1472543107
Just be a good minority!
“#ISupportKaepernickBecause White People are more concerned with "How" Colin protested instead of "Why".”— Derrick Lemos 🏳️‍🌈✊🏽 (@Derrick Lemos 🏳️‍🌈✊🏽) 1472438306
