New York City police have arrested a Hasidic Jewish man and charged him with assault and aggravated assault -- both as hate crimes -- for allegedly twice attacking the man known to fans of Howard Stern's show as "Elegant Elliot," according to the New York Post.
Police said Elliot Offen was initially attacked in September while attending services at the Chabad Lubavitch world headquarters on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn. He was punched and kicked outside the Orthodox synagogue by several men shouting antigay slurs, according to the New York Daily News.
He was treated at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center for bruises on his back, buttocks, and legs, police told the paper.
Then on Saturday, Offen was jogging past the synagogue at around 11 a.m. when one of the men who had allegedly attacked him previously reportedly began shouting at him.
"You homo," the man said, according to police. "I'm going to cut off your schmeckle!" which is Yiddish for penis.
Police said Nehoray Shabbot, 20, of Worcester, Mass., admitted to the hate crimes, according to court papers obtained by the Daily News:
"We picked him up and threw him to the ground only one or two times," Shabbot reportedly said. "I don't know how many guys were with me, maybe three or four."
Offen has been a frequent guest on The Howard Stern Show and a member of Howard Stern's "Wack Pack," a collection of quirky individuals who frequently hold court in Stern's studio.
In an early appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Offen discussed problems he had with the Jewish community, who he said did not accept him despite the fact he practiced Judaism.
Dealing with one caller who criticized him, Offen -- who identifies as heterosexual --claimed on the show he had police protection during his workouts, in which he runs in women's lingerie. When the caller went on to criticize him, Offen said:
"You want to condemn me because I am wearing girls' lingerie? Is there that much bias and corruption in the entire world?!"
