Khalid Jabara was shot to death last year on his family's porch by Stanley Vernon Majors -- a married gay man -- who regularly attacked and taunted his neighbors, calling them "Mooslems," "dirty Arabs," and "dirty Lebanese." Members ofhe Jabara family say police in Tulsa, Okla., did little to protect them, allowing Majors to live near them even after repeated red flags about his threatening nature were revealed.

The Jabaras -- a Christian family who fled Lebanon decades ago to escape religious persecution -- frequently alerted police about Majors's threatening behavior, to which he would retaliate with even more hostility.

"We realized every time we call the cops, whether if it was right away or a few weeks later, he would retaliate with something crazy, crazier, and be angrier," Khalid's sister, Victoria Jabara Williams, told CNN.

After the family was granted a protective order against their neighbor, Majors began to yell death threats at them. Majors went as far as to hit Haifa Jabara, Khalid's mother, with a car in 2015. She was severely injured; the attack left her in critical condition with a brain hemorrhage, broken ribs, a broken ankle, and a damaged shoulder. Officers found him intoxicated and urinating in public. He continued to refer to her and her family as "filthy Lebanese."

Despite being charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon, Majors was released on bail and sent back next door. The family begged for protection from police and received none.

Two months later, police say, Majors shot Khalid, who died from his wounds. Majors has been charged with first-degree murder and a hate crime. His trial begins in November.
