A man suspected of stabbing a couple multiple times is now free on bond.
After being arrested for shouting "fuckin' faggots" at a Denver gay couple holding hands, then stabbing them repeatedly, Dylan Payne has been released.
Payne, 24, posted a $25,000 bond, and the victims of last weekend's attack, Chris Huizar and Gabriel Roman, fear for their safety.
"I'm scared to even go check my mail. Like, this person ... we didn't do anything to him. What if he wants revenge?" Huizar, who was stabbed in the neck, told Denver TV station KCNC.As Roman tried to stop the attack, he was stabbed in the hand and back -- wounds that required multiple stitches. "Just seeing him in my arms bleeding," Huizar explained, near tears. "I just didn't want him to die."
"He was just trying to do more than just stab or wound us. He was trying to kill us," Roman said of Payne, who was arrested for investigation of first-degree assault.
His attorney said that there was no indication in police reports of serious bodily injury.
"I feel like he should be getting attempted murder because he stabbed me in the neck," Huizar said, noting that the two will not stop expressing affection in public, "Nothing is going to stop us. It's just a little bump. We are still continuing our lives to love each other."
Both men feel that Payne should be charged with a hate crime.
The two are currently raising money to pay their medical bills through a GoFundMe campaign. "We were just holding hands minding our business," the page reads, explaining that their injuries have left them unable to work. "We have hospital bills that need to be paid along with other utilities."
They've currently raised $9,810, surpassing the $5,000 goal.
"We should be able to show affection towards each other as we please as long as we are not hurting anybody," Roman said.
