A family argument nearly turned deadly when a man in his early 20s stabbed his adoptive fathers early Tuesday morning at the family's home in the Sherman Oaks area of Los Angeles.

Ken Coll and Tom Boulet are recovering at a local hospital after both underwent surgery. They were attacked with a pocket knife by their 21-year-old son, Matthew Boulet, who they adopted as a child, according to KABC, a local ABC affiliate. It's not clear what sparked the violence, but police are investigating whether mental illness was a factor.

Matthew Boulet, home from college on summer break, was apprehended by police at the house without incident. He could face attempted murder charges.

The incident seemed to shock neighbors, who described the fathers in glowing terms.

"Tom and Ken have been very significant on our block, great models of parenthood," neighbor Florence Riggs told KABC.
