Brian Carter and two friends were standing outside a gay bar in Wilton Manors, Fla. -- a Fort Lauderdale-adjacent town with many LGBT residents and one known for its gay nightlife -- when someone threw eggs at them while shouting antigay slurs.

"I mostly just heard the yelling and was pelted right away," Carter told the local ABC affiliate, reporting that the perpetrator drove away in a black BMW after the incident. "It was a pretty heavy hit right here, but it splattered so much and it hit a couple other people."

Gym Sports Bar wasn't the only LGBT space in Wilton Manors targeted that night, as there were reports of yolks being found on the sidewalk outside the Out of the Closet thrift shop, which donates its profits to the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. There were also egg yolks found on the sidewalk outside the Wilton Manors police station.

Wilton Manors has a long-standing reputation for being a haven for LGBT residents, and Gym Bar owner Rick Schmultzer expressed his disappointment that gays were targeted in what's viewed as a safe space.

"Some idiot decides he's going to drive by, throw an egg, and yell a slur," Schmultzer told local media. "It's cowardly. It's stupid. It's childish and it's ridiculous."

Carter posted on Facebook about the incident, publishing a picture of himself covered in egg yolk.

"They were definitely shaming us for being something that we feel like we were born with. I feel no shame for who I am," Carter said. "It didn't hurt. I didn't go home and cry. I went home and went to bed. I kind of laughed it off, but I feel bad for the person that threw it. Why would he feel like he needed to do that?"

Carter reported that the police arrived quickly after the incident and took a report, but officials say that they don't have any leads, and are encouraging anyone who knows more about the incident to call (954) 493-TIPS.

As a response to the crime, Gym Sports Bar is offering a promotion on egg salad sandwiches Wednesday.
