The vice-presidential candidates will debate tonight, and the contrast between them is stark.
Democrat Tim Kaine is a strong LGBT ally, although it took him until 2013 to support marriage equality. He has built a pro-LGBT record as mayor of Richmond, Va., lieutenant governor and then governor of Virginia, and a U.S. senator from the state, the position he currently holds. Republican Mike Pence's record is just the opposite, both as a six-term U.S. House member and now governor of Indiana. As governor in 2015 he signed into law the state's Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which critics said could be used to discriminate against LGBT people. After much backlash, the legislature passed and he signed a "fix" to the law designed to assure it would not allow such discrimination. (RELATED: How Kaine Can Destroy Wolf-in-Sheep's-Clothing Pence)
The debate, taking place at Longwood University in Farmville, Va., is the only meeting of the vice-presidential nominees. It will begin at 9 p.m. Eastern and will be moderated by Elaine Quijano of CBS News. It will be on all major broadcast networks and cable news channels, and you can also live-stream it below.
