The vice-presidential candidates will debate tonight, and the contrast between them is stark.

Democrat Tim Kaine is a strong LGBT ally, although it took him until 2013 to support marriage equality. He has built a pro-LGBT record as mayor of Richmond, Va., lieutenant governor and then governor of Virginia, and a U.S. senator from the state, the position he currently holds. Republican Mike Pence's record is just the opposite, both as a six-term U.S. House member and now governor of Indiana. As governor in 2015 he signed into law the state's Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which critics said could be used to discriminate against LGBT people. After much backlash, the legislature passed and he signed a "fix" to the law designed to assure it would not allow such discrimination. The debate, taking place at Longwood University in Farmville, Va., is the only meeting of the vice-presidential nominees. It will begin at 9 p.m. Eastern and will be moderated by Elaine Quijano of CBS News. It will be on all major broadcast networks and cable news channels, and you can also live-stream it below.

Trudy Ring is The Advocate’s senior politics editor and copy chief. She has been a reporter and editor for daily newspapers and LGBTQ+ weeklies/monthlies, trade magazines, and reference books. She is a political junkie who thinks even the wonkiest details are fascinating, and she always loves to see political candidates who are groundbreaking in some way. She enjoys writing about other topics as well, including religion (she’s interested in what people believe and why), literature, theater, and film. Trudy is a proud “old movie weirdo” and loves the Hollywood films of the 1930s and ’40s above all others. Other interests include classic rock music (Bruce Springsteen rules!) and history. Oh, and she was a Jeopardy! contestant back in 1998 and won two games. Not up there with Amy Schneider, but Trudy still takes pride in this achievement.
