After mostly staying silent on the political ascendancy of Donald Trump, Rosie O'Donnell -- a regular target of the Republican presidential nominee -- is now speaking up.
The out comedian, actress, philanthropist, and television personality has used Twitter over the past few weeks to blast the businessman and his increasingly horrific behavior. Her pinned tweet references the now-infamous 2005 video of Trump bragging about grabbing women's genitals.
O'Donnell stepped up her resistance to the candidate on Tuesday night by tweeting to attorney Gloria Allred, who is pushing for the release of unbroadcasted tapes of Trump's NBC reality show, The Apprentice. Several people connected to The Apprentice have indicated the tapes show more misogynistic behavior, and possibly racist language, from Trump. Allred and members of the National Organization for Women demanded the tapes' release during a Tuesday protest at the Beverly Hills, Calif., headquarters of MGM, which owns the footage. Like Allred, O'Donnell believes the videos serve the public's interest; O'Donnell also hinted on Twitter she may be taking legal action against Trump's continued defamation of her.
O'Donnell's recent advocacy may be sparked by Trump's repeated boasts of bullying her, which he's done for years. At a debate among GOP presidential candidates last year, Trump claimed O'Donnell was the only woman he showered hideous names upon (a lie, as pointed out by moderator Megyn Kelly, who would soon become a target of Trump herself). Then during the first debate between Trump and Hillary Clinton last month, he brought up O'Donnell again, unprompted.
"Hillary is hitting me with tremendous commercials," Trump said. "Some of it said in entertainment, some of it said by somebody who's been very vicious to me -- Rosie O'Donnell. I said very tough things to her and I think everybody would agree that she deserves it and nobody feels sorry for her."
