"Somebody's getting fired" from Pete Buttigieg's campaign.
That was the opinion expressed on the latest segment of The Breakfast Club radio show after the gay presidential candidate expressed ignorance on the Popeyes chicken sandwich.
As every corner of Twitter knows, the fast-food item had gone viral last month -- not only because it is delicious, but because Popeyes is a gay-friendly alternative to its competitor Chick-fil-A, which has a sordid record of anti-LGBTQ donations.
Cohost Charlamagne tha God had asked Buttigieg about the Popeyes sandwich at the end of the interview posted on YouTube Thursday -- likely because during the candidate's last appearance on The Breakfast Club, Buttigieg had controversially stated he wanted to broker a "peace deal" between Chick-fil-A and the LGBTQ community due to his love of the restaurant's food.
"I do not approve of their politics, but I kind of approve of their chicken," the gay presidential hopeful said in April.
However, it was clear Buttigieg had never heard of the pro-gay sandwich that had sparked such a craze across the nation that it sold out due to "extraordinary demand" and even incited an armed robbery.
"Did you have the Popeyes chicken sandwich?" Charlamagne tha God asked.
"No, not in a while," Buttigieg responded.
"No, the new one," Charlamagne tha God said.
"No, what is it?" Buttigieg asked.
"Oh, you haven't had it," said Charlamagne tha God with surprise.
"No, most of my meals are in vehicles," said Buttigieg. "What's special about it? Different kinds of sauce?"
"You haven't seen it?" an incredulous Charlamagne tha God asked again, referencing the Chick-fil-A connection. "I'm sure your team has seen the Popeyes chicken sandwich!"
Buttigieg then turned to members of his team off camera. "Why wasn't I briefed on this?"
"Somebody's getting fired today," said a voice off-screen.
"I'm still trying to come to terms with chicken fries from Burger King," said Buttigieg, in an unsuccessful attempt to steer the conversation away.
"My God, Mayor Pete," Charlamagne tha God said. And then the interview was over.
Watch the exchange in the last minute of the Breakfast Club interview below. And don't miss their conversation just beforehand about Kevin Hart's recent interruption of Lil Nas X during a conversation about his sexuality. "It still feels like me like he has some work to do in terms of his level of comfort with this," Buttigieg said of Hart.
