On your mark, get set, go...
There's never a bad time to get in shape. Whether you're looking to lose a few pounds or just stay healthy, your best exercise partner might be the same furball sleeping at the end of the bed. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 53 percent of dogs are overweight, but all dogs need exercise to stay healthy. Try some of these activities together.
1. Take him to the beach with you.
Think of how relaxed you'll feel with both of you taking a jog along the beach, both of your bare feet along the cool sand. Just be careful if you go for a swim. Start with lighter tides, and if you do go in further, keep an eye on the wind.
2. Jump in the pool.
There may be no happier sight in the universe than a dog in the pool on a hot day. If the waters are shallow enough, this can be a great place to teach your puppies to swim, too. Surf's up!
3. Go on a hike.
Get out and enjoy nature. Look for local trails around your area, and you'll see how great the fresh air is for the both of you. Just bring a water bottle to keep hydrated and keep a watch out for poison ivy.
4. Check out the neighborhood dog park.
This is such a great way to get in necessary socialization, especially if there aren't any other dogs at home. You just might make a new friend, too.
5. Take him on a run around the neighborhood.
How often have you gotten the chance to explore your local area? When the weather's nice, take the dog out and start with short jogs. Take caution, however, and be aware if your dog is at higher risk of developing a hip problem.
6. Play Frisbee.
Otherwise known as flying discs ("Frisbee" is actually registered to the Wham-O toy company), this toy is great to get your dog running around, especially if you need a break on your end.
