It was a happy Thanksgiving for Call Me by Your Name.
The gay film by Italian director Luca Guadagnino pulled in about $404,000 in its opening weekend for the domestic box office.
Screening in four theaters in Los Angeles and New York, the Sony Pictures Classics production averaged $101,219, reports Deadline. The film now has the year's highest per theater average in the United States.
Based on the coming-of-age novel by Andre Aciman, Call Me by Your Name stars Timothee Chalamet as Elio, a young man who falls in love with American student Oliver (Armie Hammer) at his family's home in the Italian countryside. The film is a hit with critics, garnering a 98 percent "fresh" rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
Lady Bird, a film by Greta Gerwig, previously boasted the distinction of year's highest per-theater averarge, with an average of $93,903 across four locations in its opening weekend earlier this month. It has grossed more than $10 million to date. Coincidentally, this production starring Saoirse Ronan is also a coming-of-age story, which boasts a gay storyline and Chalamet as a love interest.
