Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement is now streaming for free on Here TV.
Directed by Susan Muska and Greta Olafsdottir, the documentary chronicles the 40-year engagement of the late activist Edith Windsor to her first wife, Thea Spyer.
Windsor and Spyer's love story would serve a pivotal role in the legalization of same-sex marriage in the U.S.. The pair married in Canada in 2007. After Spyer died, Windsor owed $363,000 in estate taxes -- which she would not have owed if she had been married to a man.
Windsor sued the federal government for a refund and the case went all the way to the Supreme Court, resulting in the landmark 2013 decision Windsor v. United States. It is considered one of the most important LGBT rights cases in U.S. history.
