Kanarie follows 18-year-old Johan, who gets called into military service in 1985 South Africa. He's terrified of the war, but finds what seems to be a fit in the South African Defence Choir called the "Canaries." Here he travels, trains, and builds a connection with his fellow troupemates. Johan builds perhaps too much camaraderie with one, and as he begins to fall in love, he questions everything in his world. The midst of his sexual awakening is illuminated in this clip with a phenomenally fun dance sequence where Johan and his friends personify their favorite rock stars of the time, including Michael Jackson and Grace Jones. Enjoy the swirling sequence and see the film at Outfest on July 21 at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are available here.
