Renee Zellweger takes us over the rainbow in the first trailer for Judy.

The Chicago actress, in makeup, acting, and song, transformed into Judy Garland for the upcoming biopic of the late gay icon.

In the trailer, Zellweger, who does her own vocals in the film, sings a heartbreaking rendition of The Wizard of Oz's 1939classic "Over the Rainbow."

Judy, adapted from Peter Quilter's musical End of the Rainbow, centers on Garland's London performances at the Talk of the Town club from 1968 and 1969; there are also flashbacks to Garland's beginnings on the Oz set that are also glimpsed in the trailer.

Zellweger told People in a recent interview she spent two hours each day applying makeup, wigs, and contact lenses in order to transform into Garland. She called the process "an exercise in Zen."

"It was such a joy learning about the magnificence of this person," she said of Garland. "I always admired her. She was so quick and so funny. She could hit the ball back with the best of them."

Judy, which premieres September 27, also stars Rufus Sewell as Garland's third husband, Finn Wittrock as Garland's fifth husband, Michael Gambon as her manager, Bella Ramsey as her daughter Lorna Luft, and Gemma-Leah Devereux as her daughter Liza Minnelli.
