The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA) announced the nominees for their annual Dorian Awards, which honor the finest movies, performances, and contributions across a host of mainstream and LGBTQ-focused categories.
South Korea's Parasite and the French lesbian romance Portrait of a Lady on Fire each gathered six nominations while director Pedro Almodovar's Pain and Glory received five.
"It's a true testament to the rising impact of global films - and the ability of film to move us in any language - to see films from a variety of countries rank so highly with our Dorian Award voters" said Diane Anderson-Minshall, GALECA President and Editorial Director for The Advocate.
In the LGBTQ categories, Booksmart, End of the Century, Pain and Glory, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and the Elton John biopic Rocketman were all nominated for LGBTQ Film of the Year. Euphoria, The Other Two, Pose, Schitt's Creek, and Tales of the City were nominated for LGBTQ TV Show of the Year. In the LGBTQ Documentary of the Year, Circus of Books, Gay Chorus Deep South, The Gospel of Eureka, 5B, and Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street all received nods.
There are plenty of recognizable names among the nominees this year. Sam Mendes is nominated as Director of the Year for his epic World War I movie 1917, Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is nominated for Film of the Year, Laura Dern is nominated for Film Performance of the Year - Supporting Actress for Marriage Story, while Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Al Pacino and Joe Pesci (The Irishman) all received nods for Film Performance of the Year - Supporting Actor.
Formed in 2009, GALECA is composed of 260 paid television and film journalists for reputable media outlets in the U.S., U.K., and Canada. Unlike other more traditional awards, the Dorians have a much more diverse and non-traditional range of considerations.
Alongside awards for best film, director, screenplay, and performances of the year, there are also categories for the most visually striking film, the most campy film and TV show, and the Wilde Wit of the Year.
