Funny Boy is now streaming on Netflix.

The film is the latest from Indo-Canadian director Deepa Mehta, known for her acclaimed queer Elements Trilogy: Fire (1996), Earth (1998), and Water (2005).

Funny Boy, Canada's Oscar submission for Best International Feature Film, centers on a boy named Arjie (Arush Nand and Brandon Ingram), who is coming of age and questioning his sexuality in 1970s and '80s Sri Lanka.

Based on the best-selling Canadian novel by Shyam Selvadurai, the film follows Arjie's journey toward self-acceptance in a society that is not accepting, as the nation also wrestles with political strife between the minority Tamils and the majority Sinhalese.

Funny Boy, released by Ava DuVernay's production company Array, is now available on Netflix in the U.S., U.K., Australia, New Zealand, and select cities.
