Kokomo City has already made a name for itself.
The debut of director D. Smith, who is a Grammy nominee producer, the documentary explores the lives of four Black trans women who are also sex workers either in New York City or Atlanta. Lena Waithe executive produced the film.
Smith's film follows Daniella Carter, Koko Da Doll, Liyah Mitchell, and Dominique Silver as they tell the audience about their lives, profession, and hopes.
Koko was fatally shot last April, only months after the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to acclaim.
Kokomo City won the Sundance Film Festival’s NEXT Innovator Award and NEXT Audience Award, as well as the Berlinale’s Audience Award in the Panorama Documentary section.
The film is out now.
Below, watch Dominique Silver discuss her experiences with men who sleep with trans women. You can also find a recent interview with Silver and Kiya Mitchell on the Advocate Channel.
