Nathan Lane sings about being gay, walking his bichon frise, and adopting a pair of carnivorous sewer creatures in the recently-released video for “Gay Old Life” from the upcoming movie Dicks: The Musical.
The film, which pushes boundaries of all sorts, is based on an off-Broadway play by Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, F***ing Identical Twins, about rival salesmen who discover they’re twins separated at birth, each brought up by one of their divorced parents. In a Parent Trap-style stunt, they trade places (even though they look nothing alike) to try to reunite their mother and father.
Jackson and Sharp adapted their play for the film and star in it as the twins, Trevor and Craig. Lane plays their father, Harris, who has come out as gay, and Megan Mullally portrays their mother, Evelyn.
Mullally has a cameo in the video, in which Lane sings to Sharp about his gay life. “It’s a gay old life being queer,” Lane sings, then goes from describing brunch, naps, and European vacations to the time he rowed through a sewer and discovered his “Sewer Boys,” who “were taking a bath in the corpse of a swine, and that’s when I knew they had to be mine.”
The film is directed by Larry Charles (Seinfeld, Borat) and has music by Marius de Vries and Karl Saint Lucy, with lyrics by Jackson and Sharp. The cast includes Bowen Yang as God, along with turns by Megan Thee Stallion, Nick Offerman, and D’Arcy Carden.
It premiered recently at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the audience award for the “Midnight Madness” block. It will be in select theaters October 6, then in wide release October 20. The soundtrack will be released by A24 Music October 6 as well.
