Out actor Wilson Cruz has joined the cast of an upcoming Netflix romantic comedy starring Brooke Shields.
Mother of the Bride will also star Chad Michael Murray, Miranda Cosgrove, Benjamin Bratt, Rachael Harris, Sean Teale, and Michael McDonald, BuzzFeed News reports. Netflix announced Shields, Cosgrove, and Bratt’s involvement in February.
The film, directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls) from a screenplay by Robin Bernheim (The Princess Switch), focuses on a woman named Lana (Shields) who learns that her daughter Emma (Cosgrove) is getting married in a month.
Bratt plays the father of the fiancé who also happens to have broken Lana’s heart years before.
The logline reads, “When Lana's daughter Emma returns from a year abroad in London, she drops a bombshell on her mother: she's getting married. On an island. In a month! Things only get worse when Lana discovers that the mystery man who stole her daughter's heart just so happens to be the son of the man who broke hers years ago.”
A release date has not been announced by Netlix.
Cruz currently stars in the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Discovery. He also voices characters in the animated series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and The Casagrandes.
The actor, who’s appeared as a cover star for The Advocate, became the first out actor to play an out teen on prime-time television when he played Rickie Vasquez in My So-Called Life in 1994.
