Approval allows first foreign-made generic anti-HIV drug in U.S. market.
The Food and Drug Administration on Friday granted approval to a generic version of AZT made by Indian drugmaker Aurobindo Pharma for sale in the United States. The approval marks the first time a generic anti-HIV medication made by a foreign firm has been approved for U.S. sale. The U.S. patent on AZT, sold under the brand name Retrovir, expired in September. Aurobindo Pharma's cheaper version of the medication is expected to be available in the U.S. later this month.
