As today is National HIV and AIDS Longterm Survivors' Awareness Day, and the 34th anniversary of the first diagnosis, it's a perfect time to give thanks for all the advances we've witnessed since 1981.

When I was 15 years old, I met another gay man named Tyler. He and I shared a similar upbringing, similar interests, even a similar appearance, but he was about 15 years older than me. And was dying of AIDS complications.

As a man living with HIV today, Tyler is someone who I think about often. Same name aside, I could have been him and he could be me.

In honor of longterm survivors, this video is dedicated to the ones we lost to AIDS -- and the ones who continue to fight.
